Happy Valentine’s Day!
We thought what better way to celebrate the day than talking about our hearts and how to keep them healthy?
Exercise
Aerobic Exercise
Aerobic exercise is so called because during this type of exercise, you are breathing in oxygen which is combined with sugars (the food you eat) and produces energy. Aerobic exercises produces a lot more energy than anaerobic exercise.
Anaerobic Exercise
Anaerobic exercise, as the name suggests, happens in the absence of oxygen. In cases where the body’s demand for energy is immediate, such as High Intensity Interval Training, sugars are broken down without oxygen to produce energy. The energy produced is very little compared to aerobic exercise and lactic acid is generated as a byproduct.
So which is better for your cardio-vascular health? The answer is aerobic exercise is much better at improving your heart health. Your body is being forced to process oxygen at an elevated heart rate which increases the efficiency of your cells to absorb the oxygen. This, in turn, reduces the amount of work your heart needs to do when you are at rest.
Of course both types of exercises are important for your overall health. You should always consult your physician for what is the best regime for your needs and goals.
